Winter is harsh and can be unforgiving. As the temperature drops, so does our skin’s ability to protect itself. The low humidity dehydrates the skin and can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. However, with a few key changes and additions to your daily routine, your skin can stay balanced and healthy.

1. Use Lukewarm Water When Cleansing the Face and Body

The skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, is full of natural oils that protect it and act as a barrier from harsh environments. You soften that layer and remove these oils when you use hot water. To avoid this, use lukewarm water and a linen washcloth during cleansing.

2.  Exfoliate

Because the skin in the winter is drier and more sensitive, use a gentler micro-exfoliator. See our recommendations below for great chemical exfoliators which prevent you from needing to scrub and help to avoid micro-tears on the skin’s surface.

Royal Fern Phytoactive Skin Perfecting Essence

  • The carefully balanced combination of anti-inflammatory fern extracts, fruit acid, and gluconolactone nourishes and refines your skin in seconds.

Oumere No. 9

  • No. 9 is a daily liquid exfoliant that contains alpha hydroxy, beta hydroxy, and poly hydroxy acids to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, promote skin cell renewal, and promote the natural biosynthesis of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.

Biologique Recherche PIGM 400

  • Lotion P50 PIGM 400 is enriched with the active exfoliating ingredients of the Lotion P50 and the brightening agents and antioxidants of the PIGM 400 range. Thanks to a combination of flavonoids and wasabi extracts, this exfoliating toner also helps regulate melanin synthesis while respecting and protecting the skin.

3. Use Oil Based Moisturizer (Not Water Based)

Water-based moisturizers can freeze on the skin, causing broken capillaries. During the day, choose oil-based creams or add a few drops of oil to your cream to avoid this predicament. Our favorites include:

Joanna Czech The Balm

  • Rich and comforting, The Balm is formulated to provide long-lasting hydration, decrease water loss, decrease reactivity, soften skin, improve its texture, energize, and increase luminosity. Hydration comes from ceramides and crosslinked (acetylated) Hyaluronic Acid, while essential minerals, Reetha Fruit, Tara Shrub, Freshwater and Sea Algae Complex, activate cellular energy.

Chuda Healing Hydrating Cream

  • Rooted in the centuries-old, skin-healing Remedea Compound™ and boosted by the most scientifically advanced, medical-grade actives, Chuda's Healing Hydrating Cream deeply hydrates and rapidly heals dry, damaged, and compromised skin.

Cosmetics 27 Baume 27

  • Baume 27 is a multi-purpose balm that moisturizes, regenerates, repairs, soothes, and protects the skin. The cult formula is powered by three naturally purified extracts of Centella Asiatica.

MBR Cream Extraordinary

  • Cream Extraordinary is a synergistic combination of deeply nourishing advanced ingredients and precious gold leaf flakes. Cream Extraordinary intensively moisturizes the skin while stimulating collagen synthesis, allowing for a long-term plumping effect from deeper layers of the tissue.

4. Stay Hydrated

Topical hydration keeps your skin healthy, plump, and fresh. During the day, when you are inside at work, or home and the heat is in overdrive, use a hydrating mist. These can revitalize your complexion (and your mood).

Biologique Recherche L’Eauxygenante Facial Mist

  • This oxygenating treatment contains silk extract to create a comforting film across the skin, orange and kiwi extracts to awaken, and edelweiss extract to fight free radicals.

Joanna Czech The Toner

  • Essential and balancing, The Toner contains ingredients that hydrate, repair the skin’s barrier function and enhance the complexion’s resilience to stress.

Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist

  • Purifying and hydrating, this toner was inspired by the Queen of Hungary Water, the world’s first recorded perfume, formulated for Queen Elisabeth of Hungary in the 14th century.

5. Protect Your Exposed Skin

Use gloves, hats, scarves, socks, and whatever you can to keep those frigid winter gusts from touching your skin. Cashmere is a luxurious favorite as it does not irritate the skin.
