Think about it- amidst your everyday tasks, your hands are involved in almost everything you do. They can also, for better or worse, reveal our age (i.e. those prominent veins and brown spots.) Your hands need the same attention that you give your face to keep them looking young and healthy.
Moisturizing is key, as it helps hydrate and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, which can be found on the palms as well as the tops of the hands. Your palms, are covered in glabrous skin, which doesn’t have hair or absorb moisture as easily as the rest of your skin.
I recommend applying your moisturizer when your skin is damp to help absorption.
For hand moisturizer, I look for nourishing, protective ingredients including shea butter, vitamin E, and olive and macadamia nut oils. A good product will also help reverse the effects of sun damage and slow down those annoying signs of aging.
Some of my favorites are MBR’s Cell-Power Hand Treatment Cream which treats hyperpigmentation, Grown Alchemist’s Age-Repair Hand Cream which is great for fine lines and wrinkles, Environ’s Hand and Nail Cream, which targets cellular turnover and strengthens the skin, and Biologique Recherche’s Emulsion Mains PIGM 400, which is great for age spots.
For best results, use these products before you go to bed. This gives your skin time to absorb all of the benefits overnight and if you can wear cotton gloves, do it.
You may not realize how much sun exposure your hands get on a daily basis. Something as simple as driving, can expose them to the damaging rays. The best way to prevent dark spots, freckles, and fine lines on the hands is sunscreen. It should be applied whenever you are going to be spending a good amount of time outdoors or in sunny climates. SuperGoop Hand Cream is a good one!
I often hear my clients talk about the skin on their hands being rough and cracked. Hand sanitizer and dish soap play a role in these issues, as the alcohol and chemicals are particularly stripping. Use hand sanitizer sparingly and look for alcohol free versions. Be sure to wear gloves when washing dishes to create a barrier between your hands and the soap.
Mild exfoliation is another important step in smoothing the skin. Hand scrubs help to shed flaky skin. The Discovery Kit for Hands by Margaret Dabbs is a great way to combat and prevent rough hands. And a secret tip- use your Biologique Recherche P50 toner (face or body) leftovers on cotton and apply it to your hands; you are not only treating your hands to a great exfoliation, but you are conserving the extra product!
Finally, make sure that your hands are included in your daily beauty routine, as consistency is key to vibrant, alluring skin.
