Hello Joanna,

I live on the East Coast and the temperature and humidity are really starting to rise, my skin doesn’t look great, I have some hyperpigmentation which seems to be getting worse and I have been breaking out more than usual. Wondering if there are specific products or rules that I should know when it comes to skin care in the hot summer months?

I have always taken a seasonal approach to skin care, because very simply put, climate affects your skin’s conditions.  So, it is important that as the season changes wherever you live, so does your skincare routine.

Daytime Dos

  • Use lighter moisturizers, the heavier ones mixed with high humidity and sunblock can cause breakouts.
  • If your skin is on the oilier side, switch to lighter water-based products.
  • Don’t forget SPF on the face and body if you are spending more than 20-30 minutes in the sun. Look for a formula with an SPF 30 maximum. A broad-spectrum sunscreen offers protection from UVA, UVB and infrared rays.
  • Use vitamin C during the day. It not only boosts your immune system, but it also acts as an antioxidant, helping to stimulate collagen and elastin production, minimize the appearance of sunspots and protect the skin from damaging free radicals.

Daytime Don’ts

  • Don’t concentrate on intense treatments for hyperpigmentation, as heat already stimulates it and the results may not be optimal. Wait until fall when the weather cools down.
  • Don’t have invasive procedures during this time because the healing process is slower in extreme climates, again, wait until the fall or spring.
  • Save deep exfoliation for the evening.

 Evening Dos

  • There tend to be fewer changes in the evening, as skin is at rest and not exposed to the elements.
  • Gentle exfoliating at night helps skin regenerate after sun exposure.
  • Depending on what suits your skin, you can do a light cream at night or a heavier rich cream if you are in AC which tends to dry skin out.

Evening Don’ts

  • Don’t skip your nighttime routine, It is the most important one.
  • Don’t use SPF at night, when there is no sun, there is no need
  • Don’t forget about your body. It makes up a large percent of our skin and needs to be supported and protected along with our faces.
