Hello Joanna,

I have been getting these ugly blisters on and around my lips. They come once every few months. Where do they come from and how do I get rid of them or at least shorten the duration of the breakout?

Commonly known as cold sores, 90% of the world’s population and 65% of Americans have them.  They are most commonly the result of the herpes simplex virus (HSV).  When the virus is active, it can be spread through physical contact with someone who is currently experiencing an outbreak (so be careful, who you kiss or share drinks with!) These outbreaks usually manifest as small blisters around the outer portion of the lip.

Overexposure to the sun (UVB rays in particular), as well as stress, can break down the immune system, which makes you more susceptible to a flare up. All the more reason to meditate and wear a lip SPF! Most people with the virus have an outbreak 2-4 times per year and typically last between 10 - 14 days. So if you have a flare up, try these natural at home remedies that can help to heal your skin.

Press ice on the skin where the outbreak is happening. This can help reduce blood flow to the area, reducing inflammation. While this is only temporary, it can help numb the sore, and reduce any pain you might be feeling.

Zinc Therapy can be used to shorten the duration of the outbreak. In a pilot study done by the Stomatology Clinic II University of Medicines and Surgery, systemic zinc sulfate taken twice a day reduced the number of outbreaks and recovery time.  Serum Complexe Iribiol has zinc as a primary ingredient and can help lessen skin imperfections.

Tea Tree Oil has antiviral qualities and can also be used as an anti inflammatory to help with zits.  Dabbing Tea Tree Oil in the affected area several times per day can help to speed up the healing process and reduce any plaque formation. Use Sebuspot, which has tea tree oil as a primary ingredient on the affected area. It also works to help address individual breakouts, clear impurities.

Witch Hazel is an astringent that is proven to dry out areas of the skin in which it is applied. Apply an organic witch hazel to the skin to help reduce inflammation in the area of the outbreak. Pair with Masque Vivant, which has witch hazel as a main ingredient to help with the healing process.

While these outbreaks can be super frustrating, know you definitely are not the only one going through them.
