With the holidays upon us, parties and get-togethers are in full swing, and your skin should be looking its best.  

In Studio, whether I am preparing a celebrated actor for the Oscars or a stay-at-home mom for a dinner out, each of my facials is customized to my client's skin condition the day that I see them. The main difference in a pre-event facial is that I stay away from major extractions or anything too active, as skin tends to need downtime from these things. 

What I do use is a combination of technologies that could include: LED light therapy, diamond exfoliation, ultrasound water peel, microcurrent, cryotherapy, negative ionization, and radio frequency combined with my signature facial massages. 

Below are seven simple at-home tips for creating glowing, healthy skin for your holiday events: 

1. Do not skip your evening routine 

The nighttime routine is the most important one because products are up to 60% more effective when the body is at rest. Your skin is exposed to all sorts of pollutants, dirt, and grime throughout the day. Nighttime is the chance for your skin to reset, undo the damage from the day and renew the skin. Take advantage of this, and do not skip your nighttime routine. Do your complete routine every night.  

2. Stimulate your muscles with facial massage 

Daily facial massage is key. I designed my facial massager to make it easy to do it yourself. 

Facial massage speeds up circulation, bringing more oxygen to the tissue, and resulting in brighter, healthier skin. It can also change the shape of the face, lifting the brows and the jawline and emphasizing the cheekbones.  

 Other benefits of Facial Massage:  

  • Prevents the formation of wrinkles while releasing built-up tension in your face  
  • Increase oxygen flow so that the skin can respond better to products  
  • Removes toxins and build-up from the face by stimulating lymphatic drainage  
  • Adds immediate vitality to a dull complexion  

A facial massage of 5-7 minutes daily will make a real difference.  

3. Avoid heat and hot water on the body 

Heat, in general, is quite aging as it throws off the natural balance and dehydrates the skin. Opt for lukewarm or cool water and cap your warm shower off at the 5-minute mark. To combat any dryness, I love the combination of Environ's Derma-Lac Lotion mixed with their A, C, and E Oil - this adds the most beautiful glow and is incredibly moisturizing. 


4. Do not over exfoliate 

Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin and strip it of its protective lipidic barrier. It can also create micro-tears, creating inflammation and making your skin more sensitive. Since physical exfoliation can be harsh, depending on your skin's condition, do not use one more than 2-3x per week. And do not use physical exfoliation if you have acne, as the granules can irritate the already inflamed skin. Opting for enzymatic or chemical exfoliators that tend to be gentler on the skin are also great. 


5. Skip the makeup remover  

Some makeup removers can strip your skin of its natural oils, dehydrate it, and even spread dirt and bacteria over the face if misused. Use a gentle cleanser that does double duty instead.  


6. Hydrate until the last moment 

I recommend a treatment no later than the day before a big event to avoid any reactions that may require downtown, but the day of is a perfect moment to add extra hydration and brightness.  

Sheet masks are an effortless way to do this. They are a practical way to incorporate effective ingredients into your skin. There are masks for every part of the face, allowing you to use multiple ones at a time, depending on what you are trying to address.  

I also love adding a drop of oil to your moisturizer for a little extra glow.

7. Finally. Do not forget your neck, décolleté, and hands. 

These areas have fewer sebaceous glands, so they show signs of aging more quickly. Without these natural oils, your skin dries out more rapidly and is more susceptible to the sun's harmful rays, wind, cold, and pollution. As a result, lines, wrinkles, and 'age' spots appear sooner than on other areas of your body. And remember 'tech neck,' the modern-day dilemma of necklines caused by the constant motion of looking down at our devices. 

The best way to treat them is to use the same products you use on your face and your body to give them double treatments daily. And, of course, some products cater specifically to those areas that work.
