Winter is harsh and can be unforgiving. As the temperature drops so does our skin’s ability to protect itself. The low humidity is dehydrating and can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema,  psoriasis and broken capillaries. However, with a few key changes and additions to your daily routine, your skin will stay balanced and healthy.

1. Use Lukewarm Water When Cleansing the Face and Body
The skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, is full of natural oils that protect it and act as a barrier from harsh environments. When you use hot water, you’re softening that layer and removing these oils. To avoid this, use lukewarm water and linen washcloth during cleansing.

2. Exfoliate
Because skin in the winter is drier and more sensitive, use a gentler micro-exfoliator. See our recommendations below for a chemical exfoliator, which prevents you from needing to scrub and helps to avoid microtears on the skin’s surface.

3. Use Oil Based Moisturizer (Not Water Based)
Water based moisturizers can freeze on the skin causing broken capillaries. During the day choose oil-based creams or add a few drops of oil to your cream to avoid this predicament. 4. Stay Hydrated
Topical hydration keeps your skin healthy, plump, and fresh. During the day, when you are inside at work or home and the heat is in overdrive, use a hydrating mist such as L’Eauxygénante Facial Mist, the Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist or C27 Mist 27. These can revitalize your complexion (and your mood).

5. Protect Your Exposed Skin
Use gloves, hats, scarves, whatever you can to keep those frigid winter gusts from touching your skin. Cashmere is a luxurious favorite as it does not irritate the skin.
